What's new: Carnarvon Common Gound – Community Voice Leading the Way

Carnarvon Common Ground – Community voices leading the way

Carnarvon community members Sharon Crowe, Elizabeth Graham and Kay Mongoo are sharing the story of how the Carnarvon Common Ground project was born – a grassroots movement created by local people, for local people, to bring community voices back to the centre.

The first video in a new series, being launched today, the launch of Carnarvon’s Common Ground project, captures the strength, honesty and determination of community members who are working together to “get it right” for Carnarvon and the next generation.

In the video, Sharron Crowe reflects on why Carnarvon Common Ground matters, describing it as a place where community voices can finally be heard. “For our Carnarvon Common Ground… it’s bringing a voice back to our people. That’s what Carnarvon needed – to be heard,” she says.

The project began from scratch, with a small group of community members coming together every two weeks to talk, listen and plan. What started as simple conversations around a table has grown into a collaborative effort to address local issues, find solutions and build a stronger future for the town.

For Kay Mongoo, taking the time to do things the right way has been central to the work. “We want to do things properly,” she explains. “And when you do things properly, it takes time.”

The video is filled with powerful images of Carnarvon community members sitting side by side in meetings, discussing challenges and opportunities, and working through the best ways to move forward together.
These scenes highlight a quiet but powerful truth – real change happens when people show up, listen and work in partnership.

For Elizabeth Grahame, the decision to join Carnarvon Common Ground was driven by a commitment to children and young people. “I joined because I wanted more for our kids… for our young generation, to put it right,” she shares.

That sense of responsibility to future generations is echoed by Sharon, who is determined to see the work through. “I want to keep going until we get it right,” she says.

This first video marks the beginning of a broader series that will showcase the strength and beauty of Carnarvon – its people, its culture and its spirit of working together. As Carnarvon Common Ground is formally launched today, the project stands as a testament to what can happen when community members lead the conversation and shape the solutions.

The river meeting the sea – a landmark of Carnarvon -symbolises peace, grounding, and our deep connection to spirit and ancestors who walk with us every day. Our lands and ocean sustain us with traditional foods like mullet, kangaroo, and turtle, keeping us strong and healthy while preserving our culture for generations to come.
