For Yinggarda woman Kerri Dorey, the story of Carnarvon is a story of deep roots, strong culture, and a community determined to build a better future together.
As a representative of the Yinggarda Aboriginal Corporation, Kerri brings a voice grounded in thousands of years of connection to Country, a voice that is helping shape the vision of Carnarvon Common Ground.
“Yinggarda have been the Traditional Owners of the Gascoyne since the beginning of time,” Kerri shares in the new Common Ground launch campaign. “Our connection to Country is not just a word – it’s a lifestyle.”
For Kerri, culture is more than heritage, it’s a way of raising children, supporting one another, and keeping respect alive across generations.
She speaks passionately about the values passed down by Elders, values she’s committed to keeping strong for the youth of today.
“We’re trying to instil those old-fashioned values in our kids because we’ve lost the respect,” she says. “We want to see this Country thrive for the next generation.”
At its heart, Carnarvon Common Ground is a place for listening. A place where stories, concerns and hopes can be shared openly. Kerri believes that giving people a voice is essential for healing and for creating real solutions.
“Having a voice when it comes to social justice issues is important. Sometimes community members just want to be heard.”
And that’s what she sees in Carnarvon Common Ground, a space where organisations, community members, and stakeholders can come together without blame or judgement. A space where distrust can be replaced with understanding.
“I believe that’s what Common Ground is all about, breaking the issues down. Breaking down the distrust.”
Being part of Carnarvon Common Ground is something Kerri describes as “amazing,” because the work happening today will have lasting impact for years to come.
“It’s going to have full-on effects. I can already feel the change happening.”
From supporting Elders to empowering young people, from everyday acts of kindness to big-picture planning, this movement is about strengthening the entire community.
“That’s what community should be. It’s about helping people. It’s not a one‑shoe‑fits‑all and that’s what I love about Common Ground and Yinggarda. We’re opening doors, listening to people, and breaking down the issues.”
Kerri’s story is one chapter in a broader journey, one where culture, collaboration and compassion guide the way forward.
